Lower Town

  • 1733 – Peter Stephens settles at “The Hole” where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet.
  • 1747 – Robert Harper purchases “The Hole” from Stephens and operates the Potomac ferry.
  • 1763 – The town of “Shenandoah Falls at Mr. Harper’s Ferry” is established by the Virginia General Assembly.
  • 1796 – The U.S. Government purchases 118 acres at Harpers Ferry for a federal armory and arsenal.
  • 1859 – Abolitionist John Brown raids the U.S. Armory and Arsenal.
  • 1861 – Federal forces retreating from Harpers Ferry set fire to the Arsenal and torch several Armory buildings at the outset of the Civil War.
  • 1863 – West Virginia separates from Virginia, becoming the 35th State.
  • 1936 – The record Flood of 1936 crests at 36½ feet in Lower Town Harpers Ferry.
  • 1944 – A Congressional Act establishes Harpers Ferry National Monument.
  • 1994 – Harpers Ferry National Historical Park celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
